Benazepril: Uses, Side Effects, Dosage

Benazepril (Brand Name: Lotensin) is in a class of medicines referred to as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. it’s a prodrug, converted into benazepril at that is the active type of the drug.It works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, thus blood flows more smoothly.Benazepril is employed alone or together with different medications to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and chronic renal failure.

  • Benazeprilat, the active metabolite of Benazepril, competes with angiotensin I for binding at the angiotensin-converting enzyme, blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Inhibition of ACE leads to reduced plasma angiotensin II. As angiotensin II may be a vasoconstrictive and a negative-feedback mediator for renin activity, lower concentrations lead to a decrease in pressure and stimulation of baroreceptor reflex mechanisms, that results in decreased vasopressor activity and to reduced aldosterone secretion. Benazeprilat may additionally act on kininase II, an enzyme similar to ACE that degrades the vasodilative bradykinin.
